How to Crochet

How to Crochet ~ A Simple Guide for Crochet beginners

Crochet is easy, folks. All you are doing is basically making loops. The joy of crochet is all the things you can make with the loops. Patterns divide these ‘loops’ into stitches to explain how their crochet creations are made. The first thing you will do when crochet is to create a foundation chain. The pattern will tell you how many chains to make. In some instances, you will be crochet over a cord instead of crochet a chain. Crochet over a cord is common in Irish, Romanian, and Russain Crochet. They do this to create a 3-dimensional effect. But for most cases, patterns you will come across will ask you to crochet a foundation chain.

You will need a Crochet hook and some yarn. That is basically it. No expensive equipment needed to have a hobby that gives you so much joy!!!

How to hold a Crochet hook

Grip your hand over the crochet hook similar to how you would hold a knife and place your hand over the crochet hook as the image below shows.

Crochet Foundation Chain

To make a foundation chain, begin by making a slip knot. Unless you crochet over a cord, each crochet project begins by making a slip knot as this attaches the yarn to the crochet hook. Then you begin making loops, as the image below shows.

The next stitch you will learn is called single crochet. Single crochet is abbreviated SC or sc. You might find it confusing if you are following different patterns from all over the world, as in the United Kingdom and Australia they don’t use Single Crochet abbreviation. They call Single Crochet for Double Crochet, while Double Crochet in US abbreviation is called Treble. The video below explains everything! 🙂
